Our world is more closely connected than ever before, thanks to everything from improved transportation links to internet connectivity. This leads to a trend of globalisation in which is essentially the process of companies and individuals opening up to trade internationally instead of in a small local area.

At the same time, borders are becoming increasingly irrelevant, and international trade means that we’re now all used to buying fruit and vegetables out of season because they can easily be shipped in from elsewhere in the world.

But what exactly are the medium to long term impacts of globalisation? In this essay, that’s exactly the question that we aim to answer.

Globalisation and its Impact

  • Greater convenience

One of the biggest benefits of globalisation is that it brings greater convenience to consumers. The global marketplace means that you can purchase goods from all over the world, and this also opens up the ability to buy more niche products than you might find in the local area.

  • Global competition

Of course, creating a global marketplace also means that everyone in the world is in competition with each other. For commodity products, the only real way to compete is on price and delivery options. For well-known brands or for producers of more niche or bespoke products, there’s also the option to compete based on other factors such as by providing optional extras.

  • More pandemics

If there’s anything that we’ve learned from the recent coronavirus outbreak, it’s that the world is susceptible to global pandemics. One of the unwanted side-effects of a more global society is that it’s easier for germs and viruses to pass from person to person. Before globalisation, an outbreak would be much more likely to affect a small group of people. Now, a single patient can quickly spread an illness around the world.

  • A new generation of tools

Another side effect of globalisation is that we all have access to an entirely new generation of tools, many of which are designed to be used en masse while still simultaneously providing a tailored, personalised experience.

A great example of this is Netflix, which provides personalised recommendations to each of its users based on what other, similar users have enjoyed. It does this using machine learning, a rapidly growing type of artificial intelligence that’s able to analyse data and to “learn” things on its own.


We’re still in the early days of globalisation, and so there’s plenty more coming and the only thing that we can really know is that change is a constant, and that globalisation is set to continue to change the world in the years to come.

Arguing for or against globalisation is ultimately irrelevant, because it’s here to stay no matter what. Instead, our duty is to analyse the impact that globalisation will have and to try to steer a course into the future that we want to see. We each have to decide what that future looks like for ourselves.
